Which companies are hiring the most software engineers? A nationwide analysis of job postings over the past 90 days shows that the organizations hungriest for software engineering skills belong to a variety of industries—good news for technologists who don’t necessarily want to work in the tech sector.
For our analysis, we turned to Burning Glass, which collects millions of job postings from across the country. As you can see from the chart below, VMware and Amazon are on something of a software engineer hiring spree, along with Travelers, Humana, and Capital One. Banks, defense companies, auto manufacturers, and retailers are also well-represented on the list:
With tech unemployment at historical lows, skilled software engineers are much in demand. At larger companies with substantial budgets, experienced engineers can easily earn six-figure salaries—and that’s before you consider additional benefits such as bonuses and stock options. Moreover, it’s clear from Burning Glass data that companies everywhere are comfortable with software engineers working remotely, based on the number of postings for all-remote software engineering jobs that have popped up over the past year.
But that doesn’t mean someone can learn a little bit of Python or JavaScript and just waltz into a job. When you apply for a position, recruiters and hiring managers will barrage you with questions designed to reveal your problem-solving and engineering abilities; chances are very good you’ll also face a coding test or three. Knowledge of up-and-coming technologies such as artificial intelligence (A.I.) and machine learning can also place you ahead of the competition, especially as more companies turn to these technologies to “smarten” their core apps and services.
