According to Laszlo Bock, SVP of Google’s People Operations, surrounding those great employees with equally great people, and giving them meaningful work, are the two keys to ensuring that someone sticks around for years as opposed to a few months. “People don’t stay for the money,” Bock told a Bloomberg panel in April, according to Business Insider. In what might come as a shocker to anyone who’s ever dreamed about working at Google simply for the magnificent perks such as on-site gyms and free gourmet food, benefits also don’t necessarily compel people to stick around if they want to do something else. But people will stay if they believe in the mission, and if they like and respect the people with whom they interact on a day-to-day basis. Be sure that everybody working on the team fulfills those criteria, and chances are good they’ll keep working hard for some time to come.
