Although more offices are opening back up, many technologists across the country have no intention of returning to their old desks. They’ve found remote work to fit their schedules and life goals—and they’re willing to jump jobs to keep working from home.

As a new CompTIA analysis of job-posting data shows, many key technologist roles added remote jobs between December and January. Software developers and IT support specialists topped the list, followed by web developers and systems engineers/architects. Here’s the full chart:

If you’re interested in securing a job where you work full-time from home, keep in mind that employers are also on the lookout for certain tech skills in the context of those remote positions, including SQL, project management, software development, Java, and Python. 

Many technologists are also embracing a hybrid workweek, which allows them to leverage the benefits of both remote and in-office work. According to Dice’s Tech Sentiment Report, some 85 percent of technologists find the prospect of hybrid work anywhere from somewhat to extremely desirable, including 94 percent of younger technologists (i.e., those between 18 and 34 years old). Hybrid work allows technologists to come to the office for networking, camaraderie, and mentorship, while still having the flexibility of remote work. 

GitHub’s latest State of the Octoverse report showed that more technologists have shifted to remote and hybrid work; according to a recent LinkedIn study, software development was one of the sectors “with the lowest percentage of respondents currently saying that they’re working mostly onsite,” aligning with 20 percent of respondents.

If you’re applying for a remote tech job, it pays to keep some key things in mind. For example, you’ll need to assure the hiring managers and recruiters during the job-interview process that you can effectively manage your time and efforts even when you’re not in a physical office. You should also make your needs known with regard to work/life balance and schedule flexibility.
