Key Trends
Education is the only industry we analyzed that has seen significant growth in tech hiring compared to 2021 (discounting the full year of 2022, which saw an all-time tech hiring high across the economy).
Hiring numbers are up over January, and have held fairly consistent throughout 2023.
Despite increased college closures and mergers (and projected increases in closures), demand remains solid for tech talent across higher education.
Education Tech Hiring Tips
1
One perk of working in tech for higher education is that large technology projects may be funded outright (as opposed to being funded in phases), which can be a strong selling point for tech professionals vis-a-vis stability and the impact of their work. In other settings, large projects can be placed on hold or deprioritized much more easily.
2
Higher education may be an industry a tech professional hasn’t considered, and they may not know much about how colleges and universities operate. Take this opportunity to educate them on some of the unique cultural, environmental and logistical benefits of working in an educational context, including access to campus services, sporting events and other specific perks.
3
Although not unique to the industry, educational institutions are over-indexing on postings for research-driven roles. Begin searching out tech professionals who have enthusiasm for research to build out your candidate contact list.
4
IT infrastructure overhauls make room for skills around information technology information systems, system administration, network engineering, project management, technical support and workflow management; even if you don’t need these roles right now, start building relationships with candidates who have them to make sure you’re prepared when the time comes.
